AFC Postseason Outlook

The time has come! Well not yet, but at least you will be able to see if your team makes the playoffs. We have a lot of ties to settle. The schedule this week goes as follows: In this blog I will break all the ties and release the official seeding for the AFC. Tomorrow, I will do the same exact thing for the NFC. Wednesday will be an analysis of every wild card weekend matchup. Thursday will be divisional round. Friday will be conference championships. Saturday will be the Pro Bowl. Nah just kidding. Saturday I will announce season awards. And then finally Sunday, the Super Bowl Champion will be announced. So we've got a good week in store. Make sure to check out all all my previous blogs covering each team if you haven't done so already.

AFC East: Bills win the division easily going 11-5. Next best team - Patriots at 5-11

AFC North: Ravens win the division going 13-3. Next best teams - Steelers 10-6 and Browns 10-6

AFC South: Titans, Colts, and Texans all tied at 10-6

AFC West: Chiefs win the divsion going 14-2. Next best team: Broncos 9-7

In the AFC the first three seeds are clearly locked up. The Chiefs will receive the only first round bye with the one seed, the Ravens will be the two seed and the Bills will be the three seed. The fourth seed is much tougher. The winner of the AFC South will fill the fourth seed but first we have to break a three way tie. All three teams were tied after the first two tie breakers which are best win percentage in games among the three clubs and division record. However, after the third tiebreaker, the Colts were officially moved to the wild card pool since their record in common games was 4-4 and the Texans and Titans were both 5-3. Now the fourth tie breaker is win percentage in conference games. Both the Texans and Titans went 8-4 in conference games so we now move to the fifth tiebreak, strength of victory. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is calculated by combining the winning percentage of the teams a team has beaten. The Titans strength of victory was .425 and the Texans was .4125. The Titans thus, win the division and the Texans are in the pool for a wild card.

There are three wild card spots but four teams are tied at 10-6. That is the Steelers, Browns, Texans and Colts. We already know that the Texans beat out the Colts so they will automatically qualify for a wild card spot. For the Steelers and Brown, the Steelers win the tie breaker because the Steelers have a 4-2 divsion record whereas the Browns have a 3-3 division record. So the Steelers earned a wild card spot and now the Colts and Browns are fighting for the third spot. This is very simple. In week five, the Browns defeated the Colts so they will earn the final wild card spot. Now to break the tie between the Steelers and Texans, the texans defeated the Steelers in week three so they will earn the first wild card and the Steelers will get the second.
