Cooper Rush - The Future of the Giants?

Updated: Jul 21, 2020

With the recent signing of former Cowboys quarterback Cooper Rush, there are a lot of questions in the air regarding the New York Giants quarterback situation. As we all know, Giants general manager, Dave Gettleman took a huge gamble in the 2019 NFL draft by selecting Daniel Jones 6th overall out of Duke University.

Jones stole the starting job from two time super bowl champion, Eli Manning after an 0-2 start in the regular season. Jones would go on to start 12 of the next 14 games missing only two games due to an high ankle sprain suffered in week 13. After winning two out of his first three games and carrying the Giants to 2-3, Daniel Jones lost eight out of his next nine starts and many began to wonder if he was the next franchise quarterback. Jones struggled holding on to the ball throwing a total of 12 interceptions and fumbling on 18 separate occasions. The signing of veteran quarterback Colt McCoy makes a lot of sense for the Giants now that Eli Manning has officially hung up the cleats. It is good for every young quarterback to have a veteran presence either in front or behind leading and teaching them. For now, Colt McCoy is no threat to Daniel Jones's starting job and McCoy will definitely teach Jones some valuable lessons as he looks to make a career for himself. With the signing of Cooper Rush however, one must wonder how safe Daniel Jones's job really is. The Giants brought in a whole new coaching staff this offseason including former Cowboys head coach, Jason Garrett. Now we see Jason Garrett bringing in his former backup quarterback Cooper Rush.

We have seen a similar situation to this with the Giants division foes, the Washington Redskins. Former Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera who was hired by the Redskins this offseason brought his backup quarterback, Kyle Allen, from the Panthers to Washington with him. Second year quarterback (similarly to Daniel Jones and drafted just nine picks later), Dwayne Haskins of the Redskins now sees his starting role in jeopardy. It will be interesting to see how both of these situations play out but one thing is for certain; Neither the Giants nor Redskins are serious contenders to win the super bowl this season let alone their division so there are plenty of games to experiment with these young quarterbacks. If Daniel Jones and Dwayne Haskins both struggle like they did in their rookie seasons, you could see head coaches Joe Judge and Ron Rivera of the Giants and Redskins respectively give their undrafted backup quarterbacks (Cooper Rush and Kyle Allen) a serious opportunity to shine at the NFL level. The bottom line is Daniel Jones has two viable quarterback options right behind him, so if the Giants front office doesn't see any improvement from his rookie season, don't be surprised to see Cooper Rush as QB1 of the New York Football Giants.
