For anyone that doesn't already know, there was a charity golf match yesterday between Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Rickie Fowler, and Matthew Wolff. They were divided into teams with Rory and DJ one one team and Rickie and Wolff on the other. And by the way the only reason Wolff was in this with these three other big names is that he was Rickie's teammate in college. He is currently ranked number 95 in the world which of course is extremely impressive but not nearly at the same level as the three others. The match format was a skins game which means that the person who shoots lowest on the hole will win that hole for their team. At the end, the team with the most skins(holes) wins the match. There were a few flaws before even starting. The first flaw is that they're all playing for the same charity so in the end it really doesn't matter who wins. Of course you wanna be the guy who wins it for the charity but does it really matter? The next flaw is that with a skins game, there needs to be an outright winner for each hole. The problem with this is that when you take 4 (actually 3) of the best golfers in the world, its hard for their to be an outright winner. This means that if there is a tie between 2 golfers on opposite teams on a hole, than the skin carries over to the next hole. In theory this is a great concept because it puts more pressure on the next hole because it is essentially worth double. In reality, skins never works. And here's why. If its just you and your buddies with 30 handicaps or the best golfers in the world the problem with skins is that all 18 holes never matter. Usually half way through the back nine, there is already a winner with 10 skins or there have been so many tied holes that the winner of the next hole will automatically win. This is exactly what happened yesterday. Rickie and Wolff were up 7-5 going into hole 13. You would think they were in great position to win. The problem is that the two teams ended up tying the next 6 holes. So by the time they were on hole 17, the winner of the hole would automatically get enough skins to win the match. They ended up tying all 6 holes like I said so then they decided to do a fun little contest for the match. The 4 guys were going to do a closest to the hole final hole to decide the winner. This sounds cool but for someone who bet on Fowler and Wolff this is just a terrible situation. They were up 7-5 but all of that is insignificant at this point. And why did Fowler and Wolff hit 1st and 2nd on the closest to the hole. That is an extremely huge disadvantage. Rory ended up getting closest to the hole so the victory went to the heavy favorites and I lost out on what should've been one unit. Fs in the chat.
