This day in 1994

26 years ago today is one of the most memorable days in sports history. After three straight years of Michael Jordan and the Bulls, coming out of the east (and winning the championship), Patrick Ewing and the New York Knicks finally got their chance to compete for an NBA Championship after Jordan stepped away from basketball to play baseball. The Knicks made it past the Nets easily in the first round, then beat the Scottie Pippen-led Bulls in 7 games in the second round, and then the Pacers in 7 games in the conference finals all to just make it to the finals. Clearly, the Knicks had a very tough road just to get to the finals and now they had to beat the all time great, Hakeem Olajuwon, who was also searching for his first chip. The series was tied 2-2 after four games and since the Rockets had home field advantage, games six and seven would be played in Houston. This was arguably a must-win for the New York Knicks. The New York Rangers had just won their first Stanley Cup in over 50 years days earlier so the spirit in New York was at its peak. Game five of the NBA Finals is memorable for almost anyone, not just Knicks fans. The NBC television broadcast of the NBA Finals cut out to show the police chase of OJ Simpson in a white bronco just days after his wife and one of her friends were stabbed to death. OJ was a person of interest and had not turned himself in. I mean obviously the Knicks were gonna lose so NBC made the right decision by showing the police pursuit of OJ. However, the Knicks actually one that game but of course, they would go on to lose the next two games and lose the championship. I mean what else would you expect? It's the New York Knicks.
