Wow. If any of you follow my twitter, which as @hudsonschantz , by the way, you would know how much I enjoyed UFC249. Last night was a packed card and full of many huge highlights in the UFC world. I think with all of the talk of fight island happening, this UFC night was most definitley overshadowed. Credit goes out to Big Man Dana White who made this all happen.
To put on a live sporting event during these times is remarkable. Any sports fan can agree that last night was the best night to happen in awhile. So the night kicked off at 6:00 pm with a light heavyweight fight beteen two americans, Ryan Spann, and Sam Alvey. This fight was a battle between two different types of fighters. Spann's strategy was to win from the ground. He succesfully took down his opponent two times where Alvey had no takedowns. However Alvery clearly won this fight from the air landing twice as many strikes. It was a split decision victory for Spann and in my opinion was truly a toss up.
On to the next fight between the featherweights Bryce Mitchell and Charles Rosa. This was pure domination from Mitchell. I'm honestly shocked this one even went the full 15 minutes. Rosa only landed 5 signifgant strikes which I'm pretty sure is a record low for a full length fight. It was honestly sad for this guy. Mitchell improved to 13-1 with this unanimous decision victory.
This next fight was the first great UFC battle of the night. And thanks to this pitcure we now have one of the greatest pictures in UFC history so thank you Luque for destroying Price's face. These guys both landed over 100 signifigant strikes and were truly going at each others legs. But ultimately one left hook put Price to sleep sleep. TKO goes to the Brazilian Vicente Luque.
This next fight can truly qualify as a complete waste of 15 minutes and by far the most boring fight of the night. These girls were under the impression that they needed to socially distance in the octagon. From my experience in watching Woman UFC, I think that they often get more physical than the men but not tonight.
Neither of these girls deserved to win but Esparaza did come out with the split decision victory. Now we get to the old man. Aleksei Oleinik. One of the last Russian athletes to say that he is from the USSR and not Russia. Props to you my man. This guy may be old but he has fists of iron. One uppercut from this man and any average person is out cold on the ground. I was shocked to see this fight go the distance and even more shocked to see that it was a split decision. I thought Oleinik won this fight all the way but he ends up coming out with the split decision victory and gets to bring home a dub for the USSR.
Now its time that we start getting into the "good" fights. Somehow this fight between Cowboy and Pettis was a prelim. The theory goes that those greedy fools at ESPN make the last prelim a great fight so that viewers will want to buy the PPV. I'm sure the theory worked because the fight kept up with the hype. Cowboy proved that he isn't completely a washed old man and Pettis proved he is truly an animal. It went the distance and all three judges scored it 29-28 to Pettis. After Cowboy's terrible defeat to McGregor in 40 seconds he proved he could still keep up with these fighters.
Next fight up was former NFL Defensive End, Greg Hardy against small and most definitely thick De Castro. This turned out to be a disappointing fight without to much action considering these two big men know how to throw some heat. Greg Hardy clearly won the fight to improve to 6-2 with a unanimous decision victory. This next fight featured what I liked to call the elbow of death
Kattar won this fight and cashed out as the -200 favorite against Jeremy Stephens. This was honestly a great fight but the elbow of death was to much to handle.
The next fight up was a 20 second domination by Francis Ngannou. It took only a few punches and Rozen... was out cold. These are the kinds of fights that you don't get that often so you must appreciate them when they come around even if they cost you a 5 bet parlay with Over 1.5 rounds on 5 different fights. Smh.
The co- main event was a title fight between Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz. There is no way to nicely say it. Cejudo is a piece of shit. He just gives off a bad vibe in my opinion but he did fight a quality fight. He claims that he is officially retiring from the UFC even throughout I sense some BS. Many thought the fight was stopped unfairly as there were only a few seconds left in the round and Cruz was just trying to play defense but the fight was called and Cejudo defended his title.
And now the moment we've all been waiting for. This next fight was something special. After trying to fight Khabib for a thousand times Tony Ferguson "settled" for Justin Gaethje. This fight was one sided all the way. The only time where it looked like Ferguson had a chance was at the end of the second round where he landed a nasty uppercut. besides from that Gaethje fought the fight of his life. I'm just happy to see that Tony is alive after the beating he took. Most likely we'll see a fight between McGregor and Gaethje and the winner of that fight will face off against Khabib for the lightweight title.
that concludes the summary of UFC 249. it was honestly a great card and a perfect way for sports fans to take their mind off of everything that is going on for a few hours. There will be a few fight nights happening in the next coming weeks and soon after that we will be seeing UFC 250 headlined by one of the greatest female UFC fighters of all time, Amanda Nunes.
